How to Start a New Page in LaTeX

Write \newpage to end the page and continue on the next one. Use \clearpage instead when figures or tables are waiting: it prints them first, then starts the new page. \pagebreak also breaks the page but stretches the text to fill it.

Page break commands

  • \newpage
    Text mode, no math preview

    End the page here; the rest of the page stays empty.

  • \clearpage
    Text mode, no math preview

    Like \newpage, but first prints all pending figures and tables.

  • \cleardoublepage
    Text mode, no math preview

    In two-sided documents, continue on the next right-hand (odd) page.

  • \pagebreak
    Text mode, no math preview

    Break the page and spread the text over it (justified page).

  • \nopagebreak
    Text mode, no math preview

    Discourage a break at this point.

  • \allowdisplaybreaks
    Text mode, no math preview

    amsmath: let long align blocks continue on the next page.

Try it live

Change the formula and the preview redraws as you type. Copy the LaTeX, download a PNG or SVG, copy it for Word, or use Edit here on any example below to load it.

New page and page break examples

Each result below is drawn from the LaTeX under it. Copy the code, edit it on this page, or open it in the full editor.

  • Equation that may split over pages

    ( x + 1 ) 3 = ( x + 1 ) ( x + 1 ) 2 = ( x + 1 ) ( x 2 + 2 x + 1 ) = x 3 + 3 x 2 + 3 x + 1
    LaTeX
    \begin{aligned} (x+1)^3 &= (x+1)(x+1)^2 \\ &= (x+1)(x^2+2x+1) \\ &= x^3 + 3x^2 + 3x + 1 \end{aligned}

    With \allowdisplaybreaks a long align like this may break between lines.

  • Sum formula

    ∑ k = 1 n k = n ( n + 1 ) 2
    LaTeX
    \sum_{k=1}^{n} k = \frac{n(n+1)}{2}

In a LaTeX document

These commands work in the text of a .tex document (Overleaf, TeX Live, MiKTeX), not inside math. The box on the right shows what the compiled PDF looks like.

  • Title page on its own

    LaTeX
    \maketitle
    \newpage
    \tableofcontents
    \newpage
    \section{Introduction}
  • Flush figures before a new chapter

    LaTeX
    \begin{figure}[t] ... \end{figure}
    Text of the section.
    \clearpage
    \section{Results}
  • Allow page breaks inside align

    LaTeX
    \usepackage{amsmath}
    \allowdisplaybreaks
    ...
    \begin{align}
      a &= b + c \\
      &= d \\
      &= e
    \end{align}

\newpage or \clearpage

Both end the current page. The difference is floats: figures and tables that LaTeX has not placed yet. \newpage leaves them in the queue, so they may appear several pages later; \clearpage prints them all on pages of their own before continuing. Use \clearpage before a new chapter or appendix.

\cleardoublepage does the same and, in two-sided books, adds a blank page if needed so the next part starts on a right-hand page.

Why \newpage seems not to work

In two-column layouts \newpage ends the column, not the page; use \clearpage. Two \newpage in a row do not make a blank page, because the second finds an empty page; write \newpage\null\newpage for an intentionally blank one. Inside a figure or a box, page breaks are ignored.

Common mistakes

  • An empty page is skipped; \null puts invisible content on it.

    Instead of
    \newpage\newpage
    Write
    \newpage\null\newpage
  • In twocolumn mode \newpage only moves to the next column.

    Instead of
    \newpage  (two columns)
    Write
    \clearpage
  • \pagebreak stretches the text to the bottom, leaving large gaps between paragraphs.

    Instead of
    \pagebreak  (for a short page)
    Write
    \newpage

In Overleaf, MathJax and Word

  • Overleaf and pdfLaTeX

    All commands work without packages; \allowdisplaybreaks needs amsmath. The PDF preview shows the result after recompiling.

  • MathJax and KaTeX

    Web renderers have no pages, so page breaks do not apply; in Markdown exported to PDF, use the converter's page-break syntax.

  • Microsoft Word

    In Word insert a page break with Ctrl+Enter (Windows) or Cmd+Enter (Mac).

New page and page break in LaTeX: questions

How do I start a new page in LaTeX?
Use \newpage, or \clearpage if figures and tables should be printed first.
How do I start a new page in Overleaf?
The same commands; Overleaf compiles standard LaTeX.
How do I add a blank page?
\newpage\null\newpage.
Can an equation continue on the next page?
Yes, in align with \allowdisplaybreaks in the preamble.
