Angstrom Symbol in LaTeX

In text write \AA, which prints Å. Inside math mode \AA is a text command, so write \text{\AA} or the look-alike \mathring{A}. For measurements use siunitx: \qty{1.54}{\angstrom} sets the number, the space and the unit together.

Ways to write Å

  • \AA
    Text mode, no math preview

    Text mode Å (and \aa for å). No package needed.

  • \text{\AA}
    Text mode, no math preview

    Å inside a formula in LaTeX (amsmath \text).

  • \mathring{A}
    A ˚

    A with a ring accent; works in math everywhere, including MathJax and KaTeX.

  • \qty{1.5}{\angstrom}
    Text mode, no math preview

    siunitx (v3): number and unit with the correct space.

  • \unit{\angstrom}
    Text mode, no math preview

    siunitx: the unit alone, for table headers.

  • Å
    Text mode, no math preview

    Typed directly; works in text with UTF-8 input (default in current LaTeX).

Text, math or unit

\AA belongs to the text accents family (like \aa, \o, \ss), so it works in sentences but not directly between $ … $. In a formula, \text{\AA} gives the same glyph as the text, while \mathring{A} builds it from a math A and a ring; the two look almost identical.

For lab reports and papers with many values, siunitx keeps the space between number and unit consistent and lets you switch to nanometres with one change.

LaTeX
\usepackage{siunitx}
...
The X-ray wavelength is \qty{1.5406}{\angstrom}.

Spacing

Put a thin space between the number and Å: 1.54\,\mathring{A} in math, or let \qty do it. Without it, the number and the unit run together.

Common mistakes

  • \AA is a text-mode command; in math it triggers a warning and may print the wrong glyph.

    Instead of
    $1.5 \AA$
    Write
    $1.5\,\text{\AA}$
  • \angstrom only exists inside siunitx commands such as \qty and \unit.

    Instead of
    \angstrom
    Write
    \usepackage{siunitx}
  • Units are separated from the number by a thin space.

    Instead of
    1.5\mathring{A}
    Write
    1.5\,\mathring{A}

In Overleaf, MathJax and Word

  • Overleaf and pdfLaTeX

    \AA works in text without packages; \text{\AA} needs amsmath; \angstrom needs siunitx. Older siunitx (v2) uses \SI{1.5}{\angstrom}.

  • MathJax and KaTeX

    MathJax and KaTeX do not define \AA. Use \mathring{A} (works in both) or type Å inside \text{}.

  • Microsoft Word

    In Word type Å with Alt+0197 (Windows) or Option+Shift+A (Mac). In an equation, \AA followed by Space inserts Å through Math AutoCorrect.

Angstrom (Å) in LaTeX: questions

How do I type the angstrom symbol in LaTeX?
\AA in text. In math use \text{\AA} or \mathring{A}.
Why does \AA not work in my equation?
It is a text command. Wrap it in \text{} or use \mathring{A}.
How do I write a value in angstroms with siunitx?
\qty{1.54}{\angstrom} (siunitx v3) or \SI{1.54}{\angstrom} (v2).
Does \mathring{A} look the same as \AA?
Very close. The ring may sit slightly differently; for typography-sensitive work use \text{\AA}.

Have the formula as a picture?
