Checkmark in LaTeX

With amssymb loaded, \checkmark prints ✓ in text and math. For a matching cross, load pifont and use \ding{51} (✓) and \ding{55} (✗); define \cmark and \xmark once to keep tables readable.

Check and cross marks

  • \checkmark
    ✓

    ✓ from amssymb; works in text and math.

  • \ding{51}
    Text mode, no math preview

    ✓ from pifont (\ding{52} is a heavier ✔).

  • \ding{55}
    Text mode, no math preview

    ✗ from pifont (\ding{56} is a heavier ✘).

  • \newcommand{\cmark}{\ding{51}}
    Text mode, no math preview

    Short names for tables.

  • \times
    ×

    × as a simple cross without packages.

  • \square
    ◻

    □ empty box for a checklist (amssymb); \boxtimes is ⊠.

Each result below is drawn from the LaTeX under it. Copy the code, edit it on this page, or open it in the full editor.

  • Check in a formula

    x = 2 ✓
    LaTeX
    x = 2 \;\checkmark
  • Feature table

    A B Offline ✓ × Free ✓ ✓
    LaTeX
    \begin{array}{lcc} & \text{A} & \text{B} \\ \text{Offline} & \checkmark & \times \\ \text{Free} & \checkmark & \checkmark \end{array}
  • Checklist boxes

    ◻   To do ⊠   Done
    LaTeX
    \square \ \text{To do} \qquad \boxtimes \ \text{Done}
  • Colored check

    ✓ ×
    LaTeX
    \color{green}{\checkmark}\;\color{red}{\times}

In a LaTeX document

These commands work in the text of a .tex document (Overleaf, TeX Live, MiKTeX), not inside math. The box on the right shows what the compiled PDF looks like.

  • Check and cross in a table

    LaTeX
    \usepackage{pifont}
    \newcommand{\cmark}{\ding{51}}
    \newcommand{\xmark}{\ding{55}}
    ...
    \begin{tabular}{lcc}
     & Plan A & Plan B \\
    Export & \cmark & \xmark \\
    \end{tabular}
    Compiled result
    Plan APlan B
    Export✓✗
  • Checklist with ticked items

    LaTeX
    \begin{itemize}
    \item[\checkmark] Install TeX Live
    \item[$\square$] Write the abstract
    \end{itemize}
    Compiled result
    • ✓Install TeX Live
    • □Write the abstract

amssymb or pifont

\checkmark is the quickest: one package that most templates already load, and it works inside math. pifont gives a set of dingbats with a check and a cross of the same design, which looks better in comparison tables.

Checklists

In itemize, give each item its own label with \item[\checkmark]. The enumitem package can make a checklist environment where every item starts with an empty box.

Common mistakes

  • Without amssymb \checkmark is undefined.

    Instead of
    \checkmark  (no amssymb)
    Write
    \usepackage{amssymb}
  • \ding is a text command; it does not need math mode.

    Instead of
    $\ding{51}$
    Write
    \ding{51}
  • Web renderers do not support lists; use the symbol inside a formula or table.

    Instead of
    \item[$\checkmark$]  (in MathJax)
    Write
    \checkmark

In Overleaf, MathJax and Word

  • Overleaf and pdfLaTeX

    \checkmark needs amssymb; \ding needs pifont. Both are standard packages.

  • MathJax and KaTeX

    MathJax and KaTeX support \checkmark, \times, \square and \boxtimes, but not \ding.

  • Microsoft Word

    In Word insert ✓ with Insert › Symbol (Wingdings 2, character P) or type 2713 then Alt+X.

Retyping formulas is slow. These converters read whole pages and handwriting and give you LaTeX or Word with every equation editable.

Single printed formulas are free: 3 a day without an account, 6 with a free account. New accounts get 30 credits to try handwriting, pages and documents; failed conversions return their credits. See plans and credit prices.
