How to create a LaTeX table

  1. Step 1: Fill in the grid

    Type into the cells or paste rows from a spreadsheet. Add rows and columns as you go.

  2. Step 2: Style it

    Merge cells, set column alignment, choose borders or booktabs, and add a caption and label if you want a floating table.

  3. Step 3: Copy the code

    Copy LaTeX (plus the \usepackage lines shown), or switch to Markdown or HTML.

LaTeX table questions

How do I make a table in LaTeX?
LaTeX tables use the tabular environment: a column spec such as {|l|c|r|} sets alignment and vertical lines, & separates cells, \\ ends a row and \hline draws a line. This generator writes all of that for you; wrap it in a table environment with a caption and label by filling in those fields.
How do I merge cells in a LaTeX table?
Across columns with \multicolumn{n}{c}{text}, down rows with \multirow{n}{*}{text} from the multirow package. Select the cells in the grid and press Merge; the generator writes the right command and adds \usepackage{multirow} to the preamble note when it is needed.
What is the booktabs style?
Booktabs is the look most journals prefer: no vertical lines, a heavier rule at the top and bottom (\toprule, \bottomrule) and a light one under the header (\midrule). Pick Booktabs under Borders and add \usepackage{booktabs}.
Can I put math in a cell?
Yes. Write it between dollar signs, such as $\alpha^2$, and it is copied into the LaTeX unchanged. Everything else is escaped, so & % _ # and similar characters are safe; write \$ for a literal dollar sign.
What about Markdown and HTML?
The same table is exported as a GitHub-style Markdown table with column alignment, or as an HTML table with rowspan and colspan. Markdown has no merged cells, so merged text stays in the first cell and a note says so.
Can I build the table from an image?
Not on this page: here you build tables by hand or from pasted data. To read a table from a picture or scan, use the table converter linked at the top of the page.
