How to convert LaTeX to Typst

  1. Step 1: Paste the LaTeX

    A formula, or rows from aligned, align or cases. The preview shows the LaTeX as written.

  2. Step 2: Check the notes

    Anything that did not translate exactly is listed under the Typst output.

  3. Step 3: Copy into Typst

    Copy Typst gives you the math wrapped in $ … $, with spaces inside for a block equation.

How do I convert LaTeX math to Typst?
Paste the formula or an aligned block into the box above. The Typst tab shows the translation wrapped in $ … $; press Copy Typst and paste it into your .typ file.
What does it translate?
Fractions, roots, scripts and limits, Greek letters and the common operator, relation and arrow symbols, \mathbb / \mathbf / \mathcal and other font commands, accents, \text and \operatorname, \left … \right, matrices (pmatrix, bmatrix, vmatrix and others), cases and aligned / align / gather rows.
What if something cannot be translated?
The converter does not guess. An unknown command is written as visible text such as "\foo" so the formula still compiles and you can spot it, and a note under the output names it. Things that change slightly, such as a dropped \displaystyle or \tag, are listed as approximations.
Which Typst version is the output for?
Current Typst (0.14 and later) symbol names, such as inter for ∩ and chevron.l for ⟨. Symbols whose Typst name is newer than 0.14 are written as the Unicode character, which Typst accepts in math. We checked the translations by compiling them with Typst 0.14.2.
Can it convert a whole LaTeX document to Typst?
No, only math. For documents with a preamble, sections, figures and a bibliography, Pandoc can write Typst (pandoc paper.tex -o paper.typ); you can then tidy the equations here. The mitex package on Typst Universe is another option if you want to keep writing LaTeX math inside Typst.
Why are there spaces between letters, like 4 a c?
In Typst math, letters written together form one name (ac would be read as a variable called ac), so single letters are separated by spaces. The spaces do not show in the output.
