How to convert LaTeX to Unicode

  1. Step 1: Paste the LaTeX

Type or paste your formula; the rendered preview confirms what it should look like.

  2. Step 2: Read the notes

Anything plain text cannot show exactly, such as a q subscript or a matrix, is listed under the output.

  3. Step 3: Copy the text

Press Copy text and paste it into your chat, email, spreadsheet or code comment.

LaTeX to Unicode questions

What is a LaTeX to Unicode converter for?
For places that show plain text but not LaTeX: chat apps, email, social posts, spreadsheet cells, code comments and commit messages. You write \alpha \leq \beta and paste α ≤ β.
Which superscripts and subscripts work?
Unicode has superscripts for all digits, + − = ( ), most lowercase letters (not q) and many capitals. Subscripts are rarer: digits, + − = ( ) and only a e h i j k l m n o p r s t u v x. Anything else is written as ^(…) or _(…) and flagged in a note.
What happens to fractions, roots and matrices?
Common fractions such as ½ and ¾ have their own characters; others become a/b on one line. Roots become √, ∛ or ∜. Matrices and cases are written on one line or line by line, since plain text cannot stack them. Each of these is listed in the notes under the output.
Will the result look the same everywhere?
Mostly. Common symbols appear in nearly every font; rarer ones (letter subscripts, blackboard or script letters, combining accents such as the arrow in v⃗) depend on the font and can show as boxes in some apps.
What if my LaTeX uses a command the converter does not know?
It is left exactly as written, for example \foo{x}, and a note tells you which command was not translated, so nothing is silently dropped or guessed.
Can I convert Unicode back to LaTeX?
Not with this tool. If you have the formula as an image or screenshot, the image to LaTeX converter reads it and gives you LaTeX.
